The American Silver Eagle is considered one of the most popular coins worldwide. The creation of these iconic 1 Troy oz of .999 fine silver coins was authorized through the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, and production began in 1986. In 2021, a redesign was introduced by the U.S. Mint. The original obverse design, based on Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 “Walking Liberty” Half Dollar, has been updated with the help of modern technology. Now a closer reflection of Weinman’s original design, the obverse includes the addition of his traditional artist’s mark on the coin itself. The reverse of the Silver Eagle also received an updated form created by one of the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program Designers, Emily Damstra. Now known as “Eagle Landing,” the image depicts an eagle approaching a landing, carrying an oak branch to add to its nest.
Introduced in 1986, the popular and now-iconic United States Mint American Eagle Silver Proof Coins are collector versions of the official American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins. These popular silver collectibles are struck at the United States Mint at West Point and have the “W” mint mark.
The classic Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman featured on the coin’s obverse (heads) has long been a collector favorite. It depicts Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. Refreshed in 2021, the design now incorporates some of Weinman’s original details that were not previously possible. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “2024,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
A completely new reverse (tails) design was introduced in 2021. It features an eagle as it approaches a landing, carrying an oak branch, as if to add it to a nest. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
The coins’ added security features include a reeded edge variation.
The coin is encapsulated accompanied by a certificate of authenticity bearing an image of the obverse.
